Overview

As the healthcare system struggles with severe shortages of essential supplies, those with disabilities are finding it increasingly difficult to access the care and support they need. The scarcity of medical equipment, coupled with the widespread poverty, has forced many to resort to desperate measures—some elderly individuals are even using broomsticks and as makeshift walking sticks. This is the heartbreaking reality for many and underscores the urgent need for support.

The Crisis in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is facing a severe economic crisis, leaving millions in desperate need of food, fuel, and medical supplies. According to the United Nations, nearly 5.7 million people urgently require humanitarian assistance, with 1.7 million at the highest risk. The economic turmoil has crippled the healthcare system, causing severe shortages of essential supplies and limiting access to proper care. Despite past successes in public health, these hard-won gains are now at risk, deepening health disparities, particularly among the elderly and disabled. Immediate action and external aid are critical to stabilising the healthcare infrastructure and providing relief to those who are suffering the most.
